PROTECTION AGAINST INDUSTRIAL ESPIONAGE & ATTACKS

The fears are justified. Flying contraband, such as drugs, mobile phones, and weapons, into a jail by drone is easy. Fences and normal prison yard patrols by security guards offer limited protection.

PREVENTION OF ARMS AND DRUGS SMUGGLING

It’s a prison guard’s worst nightmare: an inmate suddenly has a gun, delivered directly to his cell window or dropped in the yard by a drone that can overcome any high wall or security system. It’s now common for drugs, tobacco and cellphones to be smuggled into jails with drones – which are also used to send illegal “airfreight” consignments across national frontiers.

"DRONE COURIERS" MAKE DELIVERIES TO PRISONERS

In March 2016, criminals attempted to send three mobile phones to inmates at a high-security prison in Oklahoma. In December of 2015, a hand gun was successfully flown into Canada's most violent high security prison. Authorities did not find the weapon until later. In November 2014, four suspects were arrested for flying a hexacopter attempting to smuggle tobacco into Calhoun State Prison, in Morgan, Georgia. There are also scores of documented attempts of using drones for smuggling into correctional facilities in multiple states and countries.

LOAD-BEARING SYSTEMS

Hardly any other product field is experiencing faster technological advances than that of drones. Nowadays, drones that can carry a 5 kg payload over a distance of several kilometers are already available for a price around three thousand dollars. Quadro-, hexa- or octocopters navigate by GPS and are capable of automatically following preset flight paths controlled by an operator standing at a safe distance.
